MICHAËL BORREMANS

The series Black Mould by Michaël Borremans (b.1963, Geraardsbergen) consists of twentytwo paintings, a number of which will be displayed during The Raft. Art is (not) lonely. The protagonists are anonymous, figures clad in black. They perform mysterious acts, alone or in groups, in a monochrome space reminiscent of an atelier or photo studio. Their ‘facelessness’ allows the spectators to make up their own story.
Rosa, Borremans’ monumental sculpture, born out of Black Mould, appears to be pinned down in the delightful, pristine landscape
Michaël Borremans’ monumental sculpture is of a human figure that has bored into the ground like a missile. Has he fallen from heaven? Is he an outcast? This figure is simultaneously grim and funny – he is also the protagonist in the Black Mould series of paintings by Borremans (b. 1963, Geraardsbergen), on display at Mu.ZEE. During The Raft. Art is (not) lonely, the tip of his headwear finds its destination in front of the Kursaal.
